If you love fashion and finding the perfect outfit, you likely look for ways to update your wardrobe for a good price. Yeah, I scour the magazines for thrifty fashion ideas too! Loving fashion myself and having raised 5 daughters, I think I’ve collected a few worthy tips over the years. If you’re like me, the last thing you want is to look like everyone else. Just say no to cookie-cutter fashion! So, ladies, how do we get that unique, hot wardrobe without breaking the bank? Well, I’m not going to lie- it will take some savvy shopping and patience. Here are a few of my go-to ideas to keep my look fresh and stylish.
Thrifty Fashion Ideas #1 & 2: Keep an Open Mind and Take Along a Friend
No matter how or where you love to shop for fashion, my first tip is to keep an open mind. That means don’t say no to changing things up a bit as far as what you wear and where you get your clothes. One thing that always keeps me out of any fashion ditch is taking someone along with me when I shop. This designated fashion buddy’s job is to help me keep open to trying new things. He or she also points out things that I may miss on solo shopping trips.
Even if you are a dedicated fashionista, you can still get stuck. I encourage you to think outside the box. Don’t be afraid to explore new shapes, colors, and styles. Who knows, you just might love what you find. I love to do what I call “exploration” shopping at the thrift or consignment shops so I can try things out without spending a boatload of money.
Thrifty Fashion Ideas #3 & 4: Revamp Old Clothes & Pair the Old with the New
Before you throw out those old clothes, again, think outside the box. Can they be repaired, altered, or refreshed with a little creativity? If the color, quality, and condition are still great, think about using companies like Stitch It dry cleaning laundry services to alter or revamp your tired pieces. Even better, do it yourself if you’re able to. A length change or fit alteration could make all the difference in the world.
Another good way to bring new life to old things is to pair them with something new and trendy. Though I’m not particularly a trendy fashion gal, I do love to add a couple of pieces here and there. You can wear or take your questionable pieces to the store with you and experiment with some fun accessories or layering. If you pull this thing off, you will, indeed, save a lot of money!
Thrifty Fashion Ideas #5 & 6: Swap & Consign
Talk about a fun way to update your wardrobe and get a little girl time…host a clothes swapping party with your besties! Set a time where you can all bring your gently worn fashionable items with the intention of trading them away. No one spends a dime, and everyone is happy! Make it a seasonal thing, so you can keep things fresh all year long. Also, remember, you can always pick up something at the party and get it altered if you need to.
Ok, so I love me some consignment shops! I have made some good money taking my gently used items to shops like Plato’s Closet and Clothing Mentor. Of course, there are many more out there, but these seem to be the most prevalent and known. I usually sell my items and turn around to spend that money right there in the store. If I don’t see anything on that trip, I put that cash away in my fashion piggy bank.
