There is no point denying that 2020 has been dominated by one story, one way of life, and, depending on how you refer to it, one word: Coronavirus. It was first identified as a global threat on the last day of 2019, and it’s quite fitting that this was the case. “Rona,” as some call it, is the monster that quickly dashed our glee and hope for not only a special new year but the long-awaited decade.
And, because so much of 2021 will be about recovery from its impact on our health, relationships, economy, and job security, it will most likely define the trajectory of humanity once again as we meekly dare to make resolutions on January 1st. We find ourselves asking questions like, “How do we get back to normal life?” and “How can we feel safe again in our health and finances?”. Truthfully, we will be exploring the answers to these questions and more as we plunge into a feeble new year that needs our TLC.
Many of us are looking for new jobs or business opportunities in these trying times. Among other things, our willingness to adapt and take risks will be at the forefront of this movement. I highly recommend looking into industries that are actually thriving because of the pandemic. Here are a few of my top picks for job security in the coming year.
Delivery Services
Next year, we’ll see the continued gradual opening up of businesses including supermarkets and restaurants. However, if you’re expecting them to be back to the success levels seen pre-pandemic, think again. Much of the population is not likely to trust that Covid is no longer a threat until it has been the case for months or even years.
We will most likely have this lingering fear and buyer hesitation that will change the face of commerce for years to come. Instead of deciding which restaurant in which to dine, many people will continue to use delivery services. This industry will become more and more competitive and grow exponentially. It won’t be just a few companies like Postmates vs Doordash to choose from. New companies and job opportunities will explode.
Personal Protective Equipment
The question over whether or not to wear a mask has divided families, lovers, and even countries. However, it has become clear that the majority would rather be in the camp of caution than take a chance with their health. It is also helpful to look at countries where community transmission rates have been low, many of which are in East Asia. In those countries, mask-wearing was normalized long before Covid-19 because of concerns over other viruses and air quality.
For reasons both pandemic-related and not, PPE is likely to be in high demand for the foreseeable future. If you can make it, distribute it, or have a means by which to sell it, PPE (and sanitizing agents) are a safe bet for career and business development in 2021. Because we’ve not seen anything like the pandemic in our lifetime, there is an unprecedented opportunity for business innovation and products that solve the problems we face right now.
Healthcare
We are seeing a strain on the healthcare industry all over the world right now. This is a basic case of supply and demand. There simply isn’t enough manpower to handle the surge of those in need of healthcare in general, let alone because of the pandemic. This is seen especially within hospitals and long-term care facilities.
Additionally, the need goes far beyond that for doctors and nurses. There is a growing demand for workers that have anything to do with the healthcare industry. This includes administration, food services, maintenance, educators, human resources, cleaning services, builders, and consultants. I don’t see this trend ending anytime soon either. If you’ve ever thought about getting into the healthcare industry or an adjacent field, now is the time to move in that direction.
Cybersecurity
Even if Covid vaccines are widely distributed and the infection rates drop from here on out, it’s not likely that remote working will suddenly end. This also means that cybercrimes will still be a huge threat to companies and individuals. With so many workers accessing company platforms from a non-network PC or laptop, there will be increasing gaps in cybersecurity. As a result, experts in the cybersecurity field will be highly valued for the foreseeable future. This means that the industry will likely have even greater opportunities for new companies and workers than it has over the past 10 years. So if you have an interest in this area 2021 will be a good year to make a move.
Of course, there will be other industries to actually grow and thrive during and after the pandemic, but these 4 are primed for explosion right now and in the coming months. Regardless of how long this all lasts, we are experiencing a huge shift in what we deem as important and necessary for life. Smart entrepreneurs will be analyzing needs and problems to create companies, services, and products that make a difference in the quality of human life. There will also be an immense opportunity for job security for those willing to follow the trends and make timely career moves.
