3 Ways To Support Yourself During Tough Times

We all experience tough times in life that test and challenge us. It could be work stress or a more serious situation such as a bereavement, an accident, or illness. No matter what is happening, know that you are not alone and you have the power to change how you react to it. This might seem easier said than done, but it is worth the effort to help yourself.

The good news is that tough times don’t last forever, and, while it might not feel like it at the time, you do have an opportunity to grow and change some non-serving things in your life. It starts with self-awareness and focusing on the belief that you will make it to the other side. Here are some top tips to help support yourself during tough times.

Speak to Someone

Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend, family member, or a professional can be a huge step to finding peace and balance. This happens because it can strengthen your foundation and support system during difficult events and situations. Furthermore, allowing another person to know what’s going on shows that you don’t want to be alone and want to help yourself. Additionally, this person just might have an a perspective that opens you up a new thought process or solution.

Even if those around you can’t directly resolve the situation, knowing they are there to comfort and listen to you can be a big help. If you don’t feel comfortable speaking to loved ones, consider a therapist or minister who is professionally trained.

Turn to Faith

When going through tough times, some people find it helps to turn to faith in a higher power during their period of struggle. For example, some people attend a house of worship like a church, synagogue, or temple. If doing so isn’t an option, there are faith-based communities available on the Internet. For example, joining an online Christian community could give you words of wisdom and support. Be sure to do research and speak to others to find out if this is the right path for you. There are many different faiths out there to consider if you haven’t already established one.

Focus on a Hobby

During a tough time, it can help to distract yourself from what is going on. Turning to a new or existing hobby can bring joy and a sense of accomplishment- both things that can be lacking during adversity.

Think of what you really enjoy doing, or, perhaps, there is something you have always wanted to try but haven’t had the chance to. Also, consider doing something that gets your body moving, as this also has physical benefits in addition to the mental balance it could bring.

Creativity is also well-known for its ability to bring focus and awareness to self during life challenges. In fact, many hospitals and therapists use it to support patients during challenging times. This process can be adopted for any situation. For me, drawing, painting, and writing always center me and bring focus back to myself when I’m feeling down.

These are just a few tips to help support yourself during tough times, but there are so many more. Remember, though you might not be able to control what is happening, you do have the power to change how you react to it. Giving yourself love and support is a key to moving through difficulty with grace, balance, and strength.
