Your Career Matters: 8 Tips To Make It More Enjoyable!

Your career (business or job) is important to your life because you invest your time and energy into it for many hours of the day. And, anything you do this much affects your mood, health, relationships, and even your overall lifestyle. That said, you better believe it’s crucial to do something that brings you joy and enrichment.

If this is the case, why do so many women end up stuck in careers they don’t enjoy?

There are many reasons this might happen, but self-awareness and paying attention to your needs (body, mind, and spirit) will always serve you whether you have been in your career for a long time or have just started. This “self-awareness” I’m talking about is knowing your needs and acting on them.  This means making changes that will help you get more enjoyment out of the work and home life balance. Pay the most attention to that word “balance” if you want to keep things happy for yourself and your family.

Here are 8 essential tips to make sure your career remains important but doesn’t turn into a Godzilla monster that tramples everything in your life.

First and foremost, the happiest women are those who do something they love. Doing a career you love is one of the most fulfilling things a person can achieve. This doesn’t have to be the elusive dream that slips away the older you get. In fact, many women find their second chance at career happiness later in life. Wisdom, experience, and getting to know yourself all play a huge role in this mid-life phenomena. This, fortunately, can be done at any age with the right direction, though.  Think about your passions and what you dream about. Maybe you’ve had this dream since you were a little girl.  If you’re already doing what you love, then you’re very lucky, and you should stick with it. But, if you aren’t, then maybe it’s time to change things. By doing something you love you’ll be much happier at work, and this will flow into other areas of your life.

Leave Your Work at Work

If you work outside the home, don’t take your work home with you. And, if you work from home, be extra careful to separate it from your home life. Remember balance. Sometimes this won’t be possible because you might have a creative career where inspiration can strike at any time. But, for the most part, when possible, you need to make sure you leave your work at work. This frees up your personal life for spending time with your family and friends. It’s important to have the perfect balance, and not to let one of these things encroach on the other.

Develop Good Work Relationships

One key to making your career more enjoyable is developing good working relationships. A lot of women struggle with this, and it negatively affects their working life. You often spend more time with people you work with than you do with your friends and family- a good reason to create harmony in the workplace. Always be pleasant to your co-workers and offer them help if they need it. You might consider socializing with them outside of work to develop stronger friendships. This will make the work environment more pleasant, and you might even be better at your job as a result. Avoid judgement and bullying at all costs. If you are the victim of either, notify your superior immediately before it gets out of control.

Know Your Contract

If you want to enjoy your career fully, you need to understand your position and what your rights at work are. You should request a copy of your contract or employee manual, so you know what you signed up for completely. You also need to inquire about whether the business has undergone employment law training with Peninsula Group. It’s important for you to understand your rights as a worker. And your employers have an obligation to tell you what your rights are and what’s expected of you. Be aware.

Make Time for You

The key to enjoying your career is to make time for yourself as well. Everyone needs a break from work. It’s essential to do this so you can unwind and relieve the stress that sneaks up on you as you work. It’s also important that you make time to spend with the people you love. Set time at which you switch off from work and focus on yourself.

Set Personal Goals

I always think it’s good to set personal career goals. Your employer will have goals and expectations for you, but you need to have your own. This is even more important if you have your own business. Create these goals based on small doable steps that fit your work and life. Avoid perfectionism and the trap that low self-esteem creates by rewarding yourself when you accomplish any goal, no matter how small.

Be Ambitious

Don’t let ambition scare you. You need it! Ambition is crucial because it helps you to reach your goals and get top where you want to be. And, it generally leads to better career opportunities and a higher salary. Make sure you set ambitious goals for yourself that are big enough to challenge but not so big that you get discouraged. Be yourself with ambition, meaning find motivation that is authentic to your personality.

As I mentioned earlier, it’s important to make sure you have a break from work. One of the best ways to do this properly is to take a holiday each year. Sometimes you need a change of scenery in order to fully relax and unwind. A holiday each year can be your reward for a busy, successful year at your job or business. Holidays don’t have to be expensive. Even a simple camping trip or weekend excursion to a local amusement park can be considered small vacations. Do what fits into your budget and lifestyle. This will ensure that your “holiday” doesn’t create more stress by sucking your bank account dry. Also, try putting money aside throughout the year for your trip.

You career plays a huge role in your life and it matters a lot. Make it as enjoyable as possible! The balance will come when you find your happy place with your career. Prevention will always be in your best interest. I hope these tips will help you to plan a better career but also undo some damage that may have already happened.

I would love to hear your tips about how to enjoy your work more! Please share your thoughts in the comments.

About Kellie R. Stone

"I make no excuses for my diverse roles as a Rock Your Feminine Type Coach™ and Branding Expert, best-selling author, and crime thriller novelist. Yes, I do still chuckle a bit at the irony. I kick ass as a women’s biz coach by day and kill off vulnerable fiction characters at night. What the hell, it makes for some interesting dreams. I believe that everyone should pursue their passions no matter how out there they seem to be. One of those pure heart-fluttering passions for me has always been writing. Since I did, indeed, chase my dream of being a writer, I've published two non-fiction books in the self-development genre, co-authored an international best seller, and now I'm finally pushing my much-too-old-to-be-in-the-nest novel out the door and into the world. My whole world is empowering and I adore showing others how to live life unfiltered, whether I do that through the written word or my coaching work. I love my job!" ~Kellie R. Stone
