Effective leadership requires a delicate balance between being approachable and kind and assertive and tough. When you’re in charge, there are so many things to deal with, people to consider. This means that you will have many different situations to handle. Being a boss or a leader isn’t always fun, and it isn’t always easy. You need to be the best you can be, as well as have the ability to acquire the best employees and resources. Here are 3 musts for being “boss” at effective Leadership.
Effective Leadership Must #1: Skilled in Negotiation
Using negotiation skills like active listening, problem-solving, emotional control and communication will help you in all areas of life but especially in business. Whether it’s a deal, an unhappy employee, or locating the most up to date sales software for your team, mad negotiation skills will make things go more smoothly and, hopefully, get the results you are looking for. I’ve worked with good leaders and some bad ones. One of the most definitive differences between them was their ability to speak and communicate clearly and with intent.
I’ve worked with good leaders and some bad ones. One of the most definitive differences between them was their ability to speak and communicate clearly and with intent. I, myself, have learned the hard way how important it is to say what you mean and mean what you say. This is one area that you will want to invest time and energy in. It also wouldn’t hurt to take a course or class on specific communication techniques.
Effective Leadership Must #2: Confidence
If you are a leader, you need to be a confident individual. Fortunately, there are learnable techniques to project an image of confidence. Many motivational speakers and coaches talk about the process of “faking it until you make it” as a way to walk through this process. It may not be easy, but I know it works! To be scientific for a minute, your brain actually cannot differentiate between what is fact, and what is fiction. If you tell your brain that you are confident, it believes you. This is why people with negative mindsets have trouble progressing and attracting success!
You can use things like positive self-talk, affirmations, and other positive habits to build yourself up. Stand tall, speak with confidence or do anything that makes you feel valuable and successful.
Effective Leadership Must #3: Never Stop Learning
The goal in leadership is to effectively build a team and lead them to a goal. This means transferring your knowledge and skills to others. To do this effectively, you need to keep learning yourself. It would be easy to relax once you land that dream leadership position but not very wise. Your team will only be as good as its leader. If you want to be a better leader, then learn as much as you can. Listen to a podcast every day, read everything you can get your hands on, and take courses that apply to your specific goals.
Remember, effective leadership is attainable if you keep pushing to be your best. I honestly believe that applying these 3 things will help you to do just that. Lead on, my friends!
