4 Must-Haves for a Safe and Efficient Warehouse Team

Running a safe and efficient warehouse for your business means keeping everything running smoothly. You have your inventory management, possibly supply chain management, machinery, and logistics. There are plenty of moving parts to pay attention to. It’s no surprise that warehouse managers and other workers need to have more than just a good work ethic. They need the right certifications and licenses, too! Make sure everyone knows who is certified and able to do certain jobs.

These requirements aren’t just formalities; they keep your team safe, reduce liability, and help your warehouse operate like a well-oiled machine. Look for warehouse staff with the right qualifications and certifications.

Forklift License

Moving heavy pallets and loads is no easy feat, and forklifts are the workhorses that make it happen. However, without proper training for the operators, forklifts can quickly become dangerous machines. Being willing to invest in your staff (or at least pay licensed workers more) is definitely worth it. You’ll have fewer accidents, less downtime, and more efficiency on the warehouse floor.

Occupational Health and Safety Certifications

So this one might sound a little vague, but that’s mostly due to the variety that’s out there.  When you’re running a warehouse, especially as a small business, safety is everything. It only takes one accident to turn a good day into a disaster.

It’s smart to expect your staff to have occupational health and safety certifications. Now, again, these can vary, such as understanding proper lifting techniques, and to know how to handle hazardous materials. These certifications highlight safety and keep them focused on protecting themselves and others.

First Aid and CPR Certification

Having all employees certified in first aid and CPR ensures that there is aways someone present to save a life if needed. Offer these trainings as a part of your safety protocol. Some may already be certified, but it’s a great chance to allow everyone to be prepared for anything.

Manual Handling Training

safe and efficient warehouseSo this is one that’s not as commonly used today as it should be. As you know, in a warehouse, there’s a lot of physical work like lifting. Unfortunately, improper lifting techniques can lead to serious injuries. This is why manual handling training is so important. There is usually training for new employees, but certifications are available for anyone who wants to take the next step. This training teaches staff the right way to lift, push, and pull heavy objects, reducing the risk of injuries like back strain or muscle damage.

There may be other trainings or certifications that fit your particular warehouse/business, but these are certainly some of the most common and needed. Make sure your team knows what’s available for them and expected for them to help create a safe and efficient warehouse.
